--- "DO IT YOURSELF" ENTRY ------- PURPOSE: To assist children with visual impairments transition from one activity to the next with the use of a visual and auditory schedule. Material needs for making visual and auditory schedule: simple voice output communication device such as Talking Brix™, Communicators by AbleNet, Inc. or a Personal Talker by Attainment Company. Other materials needed include: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) Plastic, Velcro®, plastic food container, and object symbols.
Preparation: 1. Cut the ABS plastic is cut into a long strap (approximately 5 inches wide by 20 inches).
2. Use Velcro® to attach the plastic food container to the bottom of the plastic strip.
3. Next, record a message into each communication device.
4. Use Velcro® to attach each communication device to the plastic strip.
5. Use Velcro® to attach each object symbol to the appropriate communication device.
Ways to Adapt this Activity. Create picture symbols of the activity and outline the symbols with puff paint, or attach textured fabric that depicts the scheduled activity. Attach the symbols to the communication device.
