Hit-filled sixth inning propels Flames to victory on Honor Our Veterans night

Faribault Daily News - 7/19/2017

The atmosphere was patriotic, red, white and blue adoring Bell Field Sunday in honor of America's veterans. And after showing their gratitude by recognizing each and every veteran in attendance, the Faribault Flames put on a hitting clinic.

The community showed its support for the Flames' 14-2 victory against the Milltown Outlaws, as about 50 people came out for the team's annual Honor Our Veterans night. In total, the names of 22 veterans, along with their branch and years of service, were read off over the loudspeaker during the fifth-inning stretch.

"It's something to look forward to," Flames player and U.S. Army veteran Pat Nelson said. "It's enjoyable to see all the other veterans in the area."

The Flames led 4-1 entering the fifth-inning stretch, and Faribault put the game out of reach once play resumed. After allowing a run in the sixth, the Flames answered by nearly batting around the order twice, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks. The bats found just about every gap imaginable in the Outlaws' defense.

All of the runs scored with two outs. With two singles and a stolen base, Tony Schwichtenberg scored twice in the inning.

Faribault scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Eric Sammon reached on an error before coming home on a Kyle Green single. Sammon and Green both came home in the third inning, after each stole a base, while Nelson came home in the bottom of the fourth.

Milltown's first score came in the fourth, a single run scoring on two singles and a sacrifice fly. Green tossed all seven innings of Faribault's victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits, striking out five and walking only one.

Though happy for his team's win, Flames manager Rick Bauer said the day was much more about those off the field than on it.

"It's nice having the support in the stands, having everyone out here," Bauer said. "We're doing it for the veterans ? it's all for them."

The win, Faribault's second of the season over Milltown, brings the Flames' record to 2-12 for the year. Faribault has three games remaining in the regular season, next playing 5 p.m. Sunday at Elko.
