Second Dawg Days Summit planned; Event is July 8 in Adrian

The Daily Globe - 7/1/2017

July 01--ADRIAN -- After a successful first-ever Dawg Days of Summer Veterans Summit in Adrian a year ago, U.S. Air Force veteran and Wilmont resident Curtis Hendel has gathered individuals and organizations to once again host a Dawg Days Summit at the Argonne Post 32 in Adrian.

This year's event, planned from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 8, will provide information for the region's veterans, as well as pay tribute to those who protect and serve.

"We wanted to do a Rock and Nobles County Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day," said Hendel. "I just feel that law enforcement has been pretty much under the gun for a few years and I think it's time for communities to reach out and say they appreciate them."

The recognition of law enforcement personnel will be at 2 p.m., with a short program led by Hendel. He'll provide a remembrance to officers who have given their life in the call of duty, give a reading and recognize any law enforcement officers in attendance. The Nobles County K-9 team will give a demonstration at approximately 3 p.m.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees are invited to meet with representatives from veterans assistance programs at the county, state and federal level. Among those offering their services are Nobles County Veterans Service Officer Bill Brockberg, the Sioux City (Iowa) Vets Center and the Sioux Falls (S.D.) V.A..

"They'll have information on benefits," Hendel said, noting that other organizations will provide information on veteran reintegration in society, addressing veteran suicide issues and other topics.

There will be information from Service Dogs for Veterans, the Rocky Mountain Dawgs Project and the original Dawgs Project, as well as a photo display by Mike MacDonald titled, "A Warrior's Reintegration." MacDonald served in the Army's Military Police Corps from 2008 to 2013, and upon his own rough transition, he started his project to bring awareness to veteran suicide. His images show the difficulties faced when assimilating into civilian life.

Kirk Mansfield, of the Faribault American Legion Post 43, will return to the Dawg Days Summit this year to also bring awareness to veteran suicide. Also attending will be a representative from the Northwest Iowa Veterans Group and Kris Schneeberg, a member of the Legion Riders, to provide information on the mission of this branch of the American Legion Family.

The Dawg Days of Summer Veterans Summit is a free event and welcomes all veterans and visitors. The Sons of the American Legion will prepare barbecues, with area Scouts serving. Refreshments and other snacks will also be available.
