BRIEF: Volunteers needed to place flags on veterans' graves

Sun Journal - 5/19/2017

May 19--LEWISTON -- Volunteer groups in Lewiston are requesting the public's help with placing flags at veterans' graves on Saturday, May 20, in preparation for Memorial Day.

The Knights of Columbus will place flags at Riverside Cemetery and Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery at 192 Summer St. starting at 8 a.m., rain or shine.

The Liberty Festival volunteer board of directors will place flags at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 81 Mt. Hope Ave., starting at 2 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus contact is Ivan Boudreau, and the Liberty Festival contact is Marcus Talarico.

Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo said, "This is a huge undertaking each year. We have over 6,000 flags that need to be placed citywide by Memorial Day and only a short window to do it, due to grounds maintenance issues."

Volunteers should consider wearing long pants and long sleeves to avoid ticks or other insects, and sneakers/boots. They should bring water, bug spray, sunscreen and a hat.

Volunteers should bring a screwdriver with them to poke a hole into the soil for the flag's wooden dowel.

Children and youths are welcome with adult supervision.
