Boots on the ground: Veterans Corner in Marlow Tuesday

Duncan Banner - 4/2/2019

April 02-- Apr. 2--Neal Owens said his life's mission is helping as many other veterans as he can and through volunteering with the organization Veterans Corner, he said the volunteers have helped hundreds get the assistance they've earned.

Veterans Corner runs on the motto "Veterans helping Veterans" and they help navigate paperwork to get the benefits they earned during their service or helping their loved ones after their veteran has passed away.

While Veterans Corner primary office is located just north of Blanchard at 3805 SE 44th Ave. in Norman, they regularly visit other towns for their mobile outreach.

They will be set up in Marlow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.April 2, at Marlow First Baptist Church, located at 213 N Broadway, in the Life Center.

The group tries to visit once in the fall and once in spring.

Owens said there were lots of people who never apply for their earned benefits.

"Some don't know what they qualify for, some don't realize they are entitled to the benefits of their spouse," he said. "As an old man, I'm not used to females in combat but the female soldiers from Desert Storm, they don't think to apply for their benefits, their husbands don't know they can get help too."

Attendees will need to bring DD214s, marriage licenses, dependent birth certificates, all medical records for vets and their spouses and bank account information for financial deposits.

The volunteers do everything out of their own pockets to help their "battle buddies," in their time of need.

"The VA (Veterans Affairs) Code 38 code book is thicker than a hamburger and certainly more difficult to swallow," said a release. "Come let our volunteers help you work through the proper claims and appeal process."

There will be an Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs rep there and someone from home health care as well to see if people qualify for their help also.

Contact Owens at 580-658-5029, or contact the Veterans Corner office Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon. at 405-387-5070.
