School board to consider school-based mental health services

Daily News - 9/2/2018

Sept. 02--Through a partnership with Trillium Health Resources, Onslow County Schools is considering a plan that would arrange for mental health providers to address student needs in the school setting.

A meeting in regards to this will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Blue Creek Elementary School located at 1260 Burgaw Highway in Jacksonville.

Trillium Health Resources, a specialty care manager for individuals with substance use, mental illness and intellectual/developmental disabilities in Eastern North Carolina, has awarded PRIDE in NC the opportunity to provide the school-based mental health services.

Board of Education Chairwoman Pam Thomas said there have been staff discussions and the presentation will give school board members their first look at the plan.

"There are just a lot of questions and we want to have answers defined so we can make the best decision," Thomas said.

Thomas said the school district has counselors and school psychologists but this would be an additional service to students to help address mental health issues.

"It would add on and enhance what we do for the delivery of services to our students," she said.

Other items on the agenda include:

The board will consider a policy revision to clarify rules for public participation at board meetings and the need to sign in to speak during public comment at least 10 minutes before meeting.

The board will also consider a revision to its policy on competitive food sales and restrictions on the sale of snacks during school hours.

A presentation on two new policies: One for Title I parent and family engagement to meet all requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act and another to align policy with state and federal parental involvement notification requirements.
