Short films screened at RDC to raise mental health awareness

Red Deer Advocate - 1/4/2019

The "transformative power of short film" will be used to advance wellness at a Movies for Mental Health event at Red Deer College.

On Jan. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in RDC's Margaret Parsons Theatre, the Red Deer & District Community Foundation will host a free two-hour workshop open to students, staff, faculty and the community, said program director Natalie Daley.

Short films will be used to open up discussion related to mental health issues and reducing stigma.

At Movies for Mental Health, attendees will watch three short films about mental health topics, with small and large group discussions following. How these themes relate to our own communities will be explored, added Daley.

The second half of the workshop includes a panel discussion where speakers from RDC will share their stories, and talk about campus and community resources to raise awareness about low-cost mental health services in Red Deer.

It's a safe, unique way to talk about mental health and wellness while making connections, increasing understanding and building compassion, explained Daley.

Dinner is free to attendees of the event, which is part of the annual #Make SomeTimeRDC initiative.
